About Sonic X Freedom Planet

Introduction: "Sonic X Freedom Planet" is a ROM hack of the 1994 Sega Genesis game "Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles". It is a crossover project that replaces the core cast with characters from the 2014 indie game "Freedom Planet". The setting uses the original Sonic 3 & Knuckles zones, but with new level layouts and a complete visual overhaul to match the Freedom Planet aesthetic, featuring custom sprite work and palettes for characters like Lilac, Carol, and Milla.

Gameplay & Mechanics: The hack retains the precise, momentum based physics of the original Sonic 3 & Knuckles engine. You control Lilac the dragon, who uses her signature Dragon Boost ability in place of the Spin Dash, allowing for a rapid, horizontal burst of speed. Carol the wildcat replaces Knuckles, featuring her wall climb and a unique Motorcycle transformation for high speed attacks. Milla the hound replaces Tails, utilizing her Block Constructs to create temporary platforms. Each character's moveset is carefully adapted to fit within the Genesis game's mechanics, offering a distinct playstyle while maintaining the classic feel of slope rolling and precise platforming.

Key Features:

  • Complete character conversion with custom sprites, animations, and abilities faithful to Freedom Planet.
  • Extensively modified level designs in all 14 zones to accommodate the new characters' unique movement options.
  • A new soundtrack featuring 16 bit style chiptune arrangements of music from the original Freedom Planet game.
This hack successfully translates a modern indie platformer's cast into the technical and design framework of a classic Genesis title.
