Introduction: "Sonic Midnight Hack" is a ROM hack of the 1994 Sega Genesis game "Sonic 3 & Knuckles". It is a complete level hack that replaces all original zones with new, custom-designed stages, such as Midnight Hill Zone and Crystal Palace Zone. The visual style retains the original game's high-quality sprites and art assets but applies new color palettes and tile sets to create a darker, more nocturnal atmosphere for many of its levels.
Gameplay & Mechanics: The hack features Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles as playable characters, each with their canonical abilities from Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Sonic has the Insta-Shield and can perform the Super Peel Out from Sonic CD. The physics engine is the original Sonic 3 & Knuckles code, providing authentic momentum-based movement, slope interaction, and character-specific traits like Knuckles's gliding and climbing. The level design philosophy focuses on high-speed platforming with multiple branching paths, though some layouts are noted for their increased difficulty and occasional enemy placement that can disrupt flow.
