About This Game

Knuckles In Sonic 2 Box Art

Introduction: "Knuckles in Sonic 2" is a ROM hack of the 1992 Sega Genesis game "Sonic the Hedgehog 2". It modifies the base ROM to replace Sonic with Knuckles the Echidna as the sole playable character. The setting is the original Sonic 2 zones, from Emerald Hill to the Death Egg, with no new level layouts. The visual style uses Knuckles' sprite and abilities from "Sonic & Knuckles", directly imported into the Sonic 2 engine.

Gameplay & Mechanics: You control Knuckles, who has his signature abilities from Sonic 3 & Knuckles: the glide and climb moves. His jump height is lower than Sonic's, and his running speed is slightly slower, fundamentally altering the pace and route possibilities in Sonic 2's levels. The physics are the standard Sonic 2 engine, meaning momentum and slope handling are unchanged from the original. However, Knuckles' unique mobility allows him to access areas Sonic cannot, such as gliding over wide gaps or climbing certain walls to find new paths, effectively breaking the intended sequence in many stages. He cannot perform the Spin Dash by default, as that move was not part of his original moveset.

Key Features:

  • Playable Knuckles in the complete Sonic 2 campaign, using his authentic sprite and movement data from Sonic & Knuckles.
  • Exploration based gameplay that encourages using glide and climb to discover shortcuts and hidden areas not designed for Sonic.
  • Access to Super Knuckles by collecting all seven Chaos Emeralds in the original Special Stages, which remain unchanged.
This hack is a straightforward character swap that demonstrates how a different moveset can transform the experience of a familiar game.
