About Sonic Westside Island

Introduction: Sonic Westside Island is a ROM hack of the 1992 Sega Genesis game Sonic the Hedgehog 2. It is a level hack that replaces the original game's zones with seven new stages set across the titular Westside Island. The visual style retains the original Sonic 2 spritework and most tilesets but applies new level layouts and some custom background art to create a different geographical journey.

Gameplay & Mechanics: The hack features Sonic and Tails as the playable characters, using their standard Sonic 2 moveset. This includes Sonic's Spin Dash and Tails' limited flight and swimming abilities. The physics engine is identical to the base game, providing the same momentum based platforming and slope interaction. There are no new character abilities like the Insta Shield or Drop Dash. The level design philosophy focuses on expansive, multi path stages that often encourage exploration over pure speed, with some layouts being notably longer and more complex than typical Sonic 2 zones.

Key Features:

  • Completely new level layouts for all seven main zones, offering a fresh platforming challenge.
  • Custom boss encounters in most zones, requiring different strategies than the original game's bosses.
  • An original, non linear Special Stage accessed via giant rings, where players collect blue spheres to earn Chaos Emeralds.
This hack provides a substantial new set of levels for players familiar with Sonic 2's core mechanics.
