About Sonic VR

Introduction: Sonic VR is a fan-made Genesis ROM hack derived from Sonic 2-based hacking work rather than Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Despite the name, it is not a virtual-reality game. The project is known for a large collection of short, highly modified stages and unusual level design.

Gameplay & Mechanics: The gameplay is rooted in Sonic 2-style physics and movement. The hack contains many compact stages built around speed, routing, and unusual geometry, making it popular for tool-assisted speedruns. Documentation for the game describes roughly forty levels in the run rather than a remixed Sonic 3 & Knuckles campaign.

Key Features:

  • A Sonic 2-derived ROM hack with a large number of modified stages.
  • Fast, unusual layouts that reward route knowledge and precise movement.
  • No connection to modern VR hardware despite the title.

Sonic VR should therefore not be described as a Sonic 3 & Knuckles remix with Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles and their Sonic 3 abilities.
