About Sonic The Final Showdown
Introduction: Sonic the Hedgehog: The Final Showdown is a complete ROM hack of the original Sonic the Hedgehog for the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive by Anthall. Rather than being based on Sonic 2, it rebuilds Sonic 1's stages with new layouts and palettes while reordering music and adding several gameplay changes.
Gameplay & Mechanics: The hack retains the Sonic 1 engine as its foundation but adds a Spin Dash using beta Sonic sprites found in the original ROM. Spike damage behavior is changed to work more like Sonic 2, and the redesigned levels are generally more difficult than the original game.
Key Features:
- New layouts and palettes for the existing Sonic 1 levels.
- Spin Dash added to the Sonic 1 engine using beta sprites from the original ROM.
- Two new monitors: one grants 50 Rings and another restores Sonic's air supply underwater.
- Bosses have substantially increased health, making encounters longer and more demanding.
The Final Showdown is best described as a harder, extensively remixed Sonic 1 campaign rather than an original six-zone Sonic 2 game.
