Introduction: "Sonic Jesters Challenge" is a fan made ROM hack of "Sonic the Hedgehog 2" for the Sega Genesis. It replaces the original zones with a new set of stages that feature a darker, more surreal visual theme, using heavily modified level layouts and custom palettes. The sprite work is primarily original Sonic 2 assets, but they are recolored to fit the new environments, which include areas like a twisted carnival and a haunted factory.
Gameplay & Mechanics: The hack retains Sonic as the sole playable character, using the core Sonic 2 physics engine. This means the gameplay is momentum based, with accurate slope detection and the signature spin dash. However, the level design is deliberately more challenging and less focused on pure speed than the original game. It introduces new enemy placements and complex platforming sections that require precise jumps. There are no new character abilities like the drop dash or insta shield; it is the classic Sonic 2 move set applied to a more demanding stage layout.
