About This Game

Sonic Anniversary Box Art

Introduction: "Sonic Anniversary" is a fan made ROM hack of the Game Boy Advance game "Sonic Advance". It was created to celebrate the series' anniversary, featuring a new selection of zones and a visual style that remixes the original Sonic Advance assets with some custom sprite work and new color palettes for its stages.

Gameplay & Mechanics: The hack retains the core physics and character roster of Sonic Advance. You can play as Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy Rose, each with their signature moves from that game: Sonic has the Light Speed Dash, Tails can fly, Knuckles glides and climbs, and Amy uses her Piko Piko Hammer. The physics feel is identical to the base game, which is more momentum based than the classic Genesis titles but less so than Sonic Advance's own sequels, resulting in a slightly stiffer control feel. Characters can perform the standard Spin Dash and, for Sonic specifically, the Light Speed Attack as a screen clearing move when he has enough rings.

Key Features:

  • New level order and layouts, pulling from and reimagining zones across the classic Sonic series within the Sonic Advance engine framework.
  • Custom boss encounters that often feature classic series villains or new patterns.
  • An original soundtrack consisting of new chiptune compositions and remixes of familiar Sonic themes tailored for the GBA's sound hardware.
This hack provides a fresh, challenging campaign for players familiar with the Sonic Advance engine.
