About This Game

Sonic Battle Box Art

Introduction: Sonic Battle is an official 2003 Game Boy Advance release developed by Sonic Team. It is a 2D fighting game set in the Sonic universe, featuring 3D character models on 2D battle arenas. The story mode, "Emerald Saga", follows the android Emerl as he learns from Sonic and friends across various locations from the series.

Gameplay & Mechanics: The game is a one-on-one fighter with a simplified four-button control scheme: punch, kick, jump, and guard. Each of the ten playable characters, including Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Shadow, and Cream, has a unique move set built from standard attacks and special techniques called Skill Cards. The physics are tailored for arena combat, focusing on quick dashes, aerial combos, and ring management, where losing all rings stuns you. A key mechanic is building your character's move list by equipping Skill Cards earned in story mode, allowing for deep customization of combos and strategies.

Key Features:

  • Extensive character customization through the Skill Card system, letting you build and save custom move sets for each fighter.
  • A substantial single-player "Emerald Saga" story mode with full voice acting and cutscenes that develop the supporting cast.
  • Multiple multiplayer modes for up to four players via link cable, including standard battles, ring collection matches, and a last-man-standing "Battle Royal".
The game stands out for its focus on technical, customizable combat within the Sonic roster rather than traditional platforming.
