About This Game
Introduction: Sonic Advance is an official 2D platformer developed by Dimps and Sonic Team for the Game Boy Advance, released in 2001. It is a new game built from the ground up, not a ROM hack. The game features seven original zones, each with two standard acts and a boss act, set across Angel Island. The visual style uses detailed, original sprite work that successfully translates the aesthetic of the 16-bit Genesis titles to the handheld's hardware, with large, colorful characters and multi-layered parallax scrolling.
Gameplay & Mechanics: The game offers four playable characters: Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy Rose. Each has distinct physics and abilities. Sonic controls with a focus on speed and has the new Homing Attack for targeting enemies and springs in mid-air. Tails can fly and swim. Knuckles can glide and climb walls. Amy is slower but uses her Piko Piko Hammer for a unique attack with greater range. The core physics feel slightly different from the Genesis games; acceleration is very fast, and momentum on slopes is less pronounced, leading to a more immediate, arcade-like control style. All characters can perform a Double Jump by pressing the jump button again in the air after attacking an enemy.
Key Features:
- Four distinct playable characters, each requiring different strategies to navigate the levels and access hidden routes.
- A full two-player versus mode using the Game Boy Advance link cable, featuring race and battle stages.
- Special Stages accessed by collecting seven Special Rings in a single act, which are half-pipe stages where you run to collect rings and chase a Chaos Emerald.
