Sonic 3 Rainbow Dash Box Art

Introduction: "Sonic 3 Rainbow Dash" is a ROM hack of the 1994 Sega Genesis game "Sonic the Hedgehog 3". It is a character swap hack that replaces Sonic with Rainbow Dash, a character from the "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic" franchise. The setting remains the original Angel Island zones, from Angel Island Zone to Launch Base Zone, with no changes to level layouts. The visual style uses the original Sonic 3 tiles and backgrounds, with Rainbow Dash's sprite being a custom edit of Sonic's sprites, recolored and given a new head and tail.

Gameplay & Mechanics: You control Rainbow Dash, whose movement and physics are identical to Sonic's from the base game. This includes the signature momentum based rolling and running, precise slope interaction, and the Insta Shield ability obtained from the Shield Monitor. The elemental shields, Fire, Water, and Lightning, function as normal. The character can perform the Super Peel Out from Sonic CD by pressing down and then up while standing still, a move not originally in Sonic 3. There is no Drop Dash. The game retains the Tails and Knuckles save files, but both characters are also replaced by the Rainbow Dash sprite, so all three play identically. The Super transformation is available if all Chaos Emeralds are collected.

Key Features:

  • Character sprite replacement, turning Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles into Rainbow Dash with custom running and jumping animations.
  • Inclusion of the Super Peel Out technique, adding a faster standing start option not found in the original Sonic 3.
  • Faithful preservation of the original Sonic 3 & Knuckles level design, physics, and special stages, offering the authentic experience with a new visual coat.
This hack is a straightforward visual modification that does not alter the core challenge or flow of the classic Sonic 3 stages.
