About This Game
Introduction: "Metal Sonic 2" is a ROM hack of the 1992 game "Sonic the Hedgehog 2" for the Sega Genesis. It is not an official Sega title. The hack transforms the core game into a story focused on Metal Sonic, featuring all the original zones from Sonic 2, such as Emerald Hill and Chemical Plant, but with significant graphical and gameplay alterations. The visual style replaces Sonic's sprites with custom art for Metal Sonic and modifies level palettes to create a darker, more metallic atmosphere.
Gameplay & Mechanics: The player controls Metal Sonic as the sole playable character. The physics engine is the original Sonic 2 engine, so it retains that game's momentum-based platforming and slope detection. However, Metal Sonic's abilities are different. He cannot spin-dash like Sonic. Instead, he uses a unique charge dash move, performed by holding down and a jump button, which propels him forward with a burst of speed and a distinctive visual effect. He also possesses a hover ability, allowing brief mid-air suspension by pressing the jump button again after a charge dash, which alters traditional platforming routes. He does not have a super form.
Key Features:
- Complete character conversion with custom Metal Sonic sprites, animations, and a reworked HUD.
- New abilities like the charge dash and hover, which change how players navigate the familiar Sonic 2 levels.
- Altered level palettes and minor graphical tweaks to suit the mechanical theme, though the stage layouts themselves are not redesigned.
