About Sonic Halloween
Introduction: "Sonic Halloween" is a fan-made ROM hack of the 1991 Sega Genesis game Sonic the Hedgehog. It runs on the original game's engine, not a Flash Classic system, though it may have been distributed as a playable Flash file. The hack features two new zones, Haunted Hill Zone and Pumpkin Palace Zone, which replace Green Hill Zone and Marble Zone. The visual style uses heavily modified palettes to create a dark, orange, and purple Halloween aesthetic, but relies on the original game's spritework and tile sets.
Gameplay & Mechanics: The player controls Sonic with his standard Genesis-era move set: jumping and the spin dash. The physics are identical to the base Sonic 1 ROM, preserving its momentum-based platforming and slope detection. There are no new playable characters, abilities like the insta-shield, or super transformations. The challenge comes from the new level layouts, which are constructed from the original game's tiles and objects but arranged to create a more maze-like and trap-focused experience, especially in the castle-themed Pumpkin Palace Zone.
Key Features:
- Seasonal-themed level design with custom layouts that emphasize exploration and hazard avoidance over pure speed.
- Complete graphical overhaul using palette swaps to create a consistent Halloween atmosphere of blacks, oranges, and deep purples.
- Modified enemy placements and boss encounters, such as a reskinned Dr. Robotnik battle, to fit the spooky theme.
