About Sonic the Hedgehog: Genesis
Sonic the Hedgehog: Genesis is the official Game Boy Advance adaptation of Sega's original 1991 Sonic the Hedgehog, released in 2006 for the series' 15th anniversary. It brings Sonic's first adventure to Nintendo's handheld with two gameplay modes, a save feature, and a menu for revisiting unlocked zones.
Original Mode vs. Anniversary Mode
The game offers two ways to play the original Sonic adventure:
- Original Mode: Uses Sonic's classic 1991 move set. You can run, jump, and roll, but the Spin Dash is not available.
- Anniversary Mode: Adds the Spin Dash, allowing Sonic to build up speed from a standing position before launching forward in a rolling attack.

Both modes follow the same main adventure rather than offering separate campaigns. Anniversary Mode is useful for players who prefer the Spin Dash introduced in later Sonic games, while Original Mode stays closer to the original controls.
Gameplay and Objectives
Guide Sonic through side-scrolling stages filled with enemies, moving platforms, spikes, and environmental hazards. Collect rings for protection, break item monitors to obtain power-ups, and reach the end of each act.
When Sonic takes damage while carrying rings, they scatter and can be collected again before disappearing. Without rings or a protective shield, most enemy attacks and hazards will cost a life.
Each stage rewards a combination of speed and careful platforming. Running downhill builds momentum, while jumping and rolling help Sonic overcome obstacles and defeat enemies. Some areas contain alternate paths that encourage exploration.
Zones and Boss Battles
The game includes the six main zones from the original Sonic the Hedgehog:
- Green Hill Zone: Grassy slopes, palm trees, loops, and waterfalls introduce Sonic's basic movement.
- Marble Zone: Underground passages, lava, and moving platforms demand careful timing.
- Spring Yard Zone: Springs, bumpers, and vertical platforming create a more complicated environment.
- Labyrinth Zone: Underwater sections require Sonic to collect air bubbles to avoid drowning.
- Star Light Zone: High-speed paths, moving platforms, and seesaws provide new challenges.
- Scrap Brain Zone: Industrial machinery, traps, and hazardous passages lead toward the final confrontation.

Most zones contain three acts, ending with a battle against Dr. Robotnik. After Scrap Brain, Sonic reaches the Final Zone for the last encounter.
Saving Progress and Special Stages
Unlike the original Sega Genesis release, this Game Boy Advance version supports saved progress. The zone selection screen lets players return to previously reached areas, while locations that have not yet been unlocked appear as question marks.
Special Stages provide an additional challenge. Finish a qualifying act with at least 50 rings to enter a rotating maze, where Sonic must navigate obstacles and reach a Chaos Emerald while avoiding Goal blocks.
The game preserves the familiar structure of Sonic's first adventure while adding handheld-friendly features. Players can choose between the original movement style and the Spin Dash, making the two modes the most noticeable gameplay difference.
Anniversary Mode: Spin Dash
- Down + A or B: Hold Down while standing still, then press A or B to charge the Spin Dash.
- Release Down: Launch Sonic forward in a rolling attack.
Note: Spin Dash is available only in Anniversary Mode. Original Mode retains the classic Sonic 1 move set.
