About This Game
Introduction: Sonic Blast, known as G Sonic in Japan, is an official Sega platformer released for the Game Gear in 1996. It is a side story set across five zones, including Green Hill and a volcanic area. The game is visually defined by its use of pre rendered 3D model sprites for characters and some enemies, creating a chunky, digitized look that contrasts with the 2D pixel art backgrounds.
Gameplay & Mechanics: The game features two playable characters, Sonic and Knuckles. Both characters control with a notably slow, heavy physics engine that lacks the momentum and slope interaction of the 16 bit titles. Jumping feels floaty and imprecise. Sonic can perform a basic spin dash, while Knuckles can glide and climb walls as expected, though these maneuvers are hampered by the overall sluggish engine. There are no new abilities like the Insta Shield or Drop Dash. The level design is built around this slower pace, featuring more straightforward platforming and less emphasis on building speed.
Key Features:
- Pre rendered 3D sprite graphics for a distinct, if divisive, visual style.
- Playable Knuckles with his full suite of glide and climb abilities.
- Special Stages accessed by collecting 50 rings and passing a checkpoint, which are isometric 3D mazes where you chase a Chaos Emerald.
